Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 62 /100

Critics generally view America's Got Talent as an accessible, high-energy spectacle designed for broad audience appeal rather than prestige television. Reviewers often describe the variety competition as a hybrid between American Idol and classic gong shows, offering a fast-paced mix of bizarre novelties and genuine talent.

While commentators observe that the inconsistent quality of the acts can give the production the feel of an upscale high-school talent show despite its glitzy presentation, they also note its effectiveness. The series succeeds as unthreatening, mindless entertainment that thrives on relatable contestants taking risks and delivering instant human-interest stories.

“Fifty percent American Idol. Fifty percent The Gong Show. One hundred percent spectacle.”

“Though the show plays out on a glitzy stage with sophisticated lighting, thanks to the wide variety (and quality) of the acts it often feels like a high-school talent show”

“America’s Got Talent isn’t going to elevate art, but in the end it features relatable people taking chances.”

“Not only are they inexpensive, but they also yield instant human-interest stories that, in success, will provide delightful, unthreatening fodder”
