American Nightmare

True crime documentaries often hinge on the hunt for an elusive perpetrator, but the 2015 California case at the center of American Nightmare takes a far stranger path. What begins with a harrowing home invasion, an abduction, and a ransom demand quickly twists into an ordeal where the victims themselves are doubted. When Denise Huskins reappeared after the kidnapping, the narrative turned completely upside down, leading to accusations that the couple had staged the entire event.

The documentary relies on direct interviews to untangle an unbelievable series of events, touching on the strain of a new relationship and the presence of an ex-fiancée. It keeps attention because the strange details refuse to fit a conventional mold, exposing the secondary tortures that followed when surviving an abduction only invited suspicion.
