Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 90 /100

Our Planet is widely celebrated as a visually breathtaking achievement that builds upon the foundational success of previous landmark nature documentaries. While it utilizes the familiar aesthetic polish of shows like Planet Earth, it distinguishes itself by centering the urgent, often painful realities of climate change and biodiversity loss as core narrative threads.

Critical reception is largely enthusiastic regarding the series' ambitious scope and production quality. Some reviewers note a tension between the show's focus on spectacular natural beauty and its explicit environmental advocacy, with occasional critiques suggesting the climate messaging can feel inconsistently integrated. However, most agree that the series succeeds in its goal of forcing viewers to confront the human impact on the natural world, ultimately serving as an essential, emotionally resonant call to action.

“It forces viewers to acknowledge their own complicity in the destruction of nature, in the moment.”

“Visually stunning, scientifically solid, and emotionally manipulative in the best and worst ways.”

“The result is a painfully beautiful eight-hour experience, bewitching in its loveliness and diversity even as it agitates, relentlessly, for human action against climate change.”

“The scenes that attempt to visualize loss can feel tacked on, but they are also the most original and impactful moments of the series.”

Why fans love it

David Attenborough narrates this wide-angle look at the Earth, moving from remote wilderness areas to the deep ocean. The series focuses on the interconnected nature of ecosystems, showing how wildlife adapts to changing conditions across the globe. By highlighting both the resilience of various species and the fragility of their habitats, the production creates a clear connection between domestic viewers and distant environmental shifts.

The cinematography pushes beyond typical nature documentary standards, prioritizing high-definition captures of animal behaviors in their natural environments. Each installment acts as a survey of a specific ecosystem, identifying the specific threats posed by global warming and human activity. Instead of relying solely on isolated shots of animals, the show builds a narrative around the urgent state of ecology. It provides a visual record of how climate change alters the daily reality for life on Earth.
