Overview

Sasaki is an overworked salaryman drifting through the corporate grind, sustained by cigarettes and the cheerful service and smile of Yamada, the clerk at his favorite supermarket. But one night after a grueling shift, he arrives late to find Yamada nowhere to be seen. With nowhere left to smoke, his spirits sink—until a pierced young woman calls out to him: “You can smoke here.”

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 70 /100

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You has garnered a mixed-to-warm reception from critics, who largely appreciate its adult-centered premise and aesthetic execution while harboring some mixed feelings about its dynamic. Anime Feminist welcomed the series for depicting a grounded and natural friendship between working adults, finding charm in the heroine's contrasting work and personal identities.

On the other hand, some reviewers expressed hesitation regarding the show's pacing and central dynamic. While ScreenAnarchy praised the voice acting and artwork, the reviewer noted a lingering queasy impression regarding the central relationship, and Anime News Network noted that the series leans heavily on a front-loaded setup to establish its core dynamic.

“It's beautifully drawn and the voice performances are good, but I was left with a queasy feeling.”

“It’s nice to see it executed in a way that feels incredibly natural, even if there’s the twist of Yamada’s work persona versus who she actually is when she’s not on the job.”
