Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 65 /100

The Daily Life of the Immortal King has garnered a mixed-to-positive reception, primarily recognized as a fast-paced blend of supernatural action and high school comedy. Positive reviews praise its blend of high-energy shonen hijinks, relatable school dynamics, and easy laughs drawn from slapstick antics alongside Wang Ling's deadpan, low-key demeanor.

However, the show faces criticism regarding its central trope of an overpowered protagonist. Some viewers feel the narrative lacks genuine narrative stakes and becomes uninteresting, noting that watching a massively powerful character repeatedly hold back his true abilities and hide them from classmates wears thin across the story.

“This humor-heavy action anime has Dragon Ball Z hijinks with a faster pace and a relatable modern classroom setting.”

“The story is not interesting in the slightest, it starts by introducing this massively overpowered character and then proceeds to follow him around whilst he holds back his power and keeps it a secret...”

Why fans love it

The Daily Life of the Immortal King blends the structured tension of xianxia cultivation with the mundane tropes of a teen school comedy. Wang Ling arrives at high school as a master of power who only wants to remain invisible in the classroom. This premise turns the typical hero’s journey inside out, focusing on the friction between cosmic ability and the social pressures of sixteen-year-old life. The show plays with these mismatched scales for laughs as its protagonist consistently fails to keep his head down.

The series utilizes an anime-inspired visual style to handle both high-stakes magical combat and quiet character interactions. Sun Lulu and the rest of the cast navigate a world where academic exams carry as much intensity as ancient spirit arts. It is a show for anyone interested in watching a legend struggle to fit into a desk and chair. The humor relies on the absurdity of a near-invincible student trapped in a curriculum that is entirely beneath him.
