The Quest

Critical reception for the 2022 reboot of The Quest was decidedly mixed, with reviewers expressing conflicting views on its hybrid format. While critics praised the ambition behind dropping real teenagers into an immersive fantasy world—noting the dedication of the actors and the unique sense of camaraderie among the young contestants—many felt the series struggled to balance its dual identities. Outlets pointed out that blending scripted narrative with unscripted reality competition resulted in a muddled experience that left the show feeling confused about what it wanted to be.

While some reviewers admired the production design and rich storytelling world, others criticized the writing quality and felt the contestants' personal journeys were overshadowed by the heavy narrative mechanics. Ultimately, several critics suggested the concept might have worked better had it committed fully to either a straight scripted fantasy adventure or a conventional reality contest.
