Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 88 /100

Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake earned strong critical praise for successfully aging up the franchise alongside its original audience. Reviewers highlighted the spin-off's TV-14 rating and willingness to dive into darker, more melancholic territory, tackling complex adult themes, existential drift, and the hardships of growing up without discarding the whimsical charm and humor that defined the original series.

Critics also commended the show's multiversal storytelling and distinctive visual design, noting that each alternate dimension feels visually and tonally purposeful. Special praise was directed toward the emotional narrative depth given to returning characters, particularly providing satisfying closure to Simon Petrikov's long-running journey rather than relying on hollow nostalgia.

“a fitting return to The Land of Ooo with meta reflections galore on what it means to revisit a vast story as beloved as this one”

“ushers in a whole new era of the franchise as it fully dives into the darker tones that some of the most memorable episodes of the original TV series only got to dabble in”

“these characters are a joy to watch, delightfully bobbing in and out of the narrative”

Why fans love it

This 2023 animated series takes a whimsical yet distinctly adult approach to high-stakes fantasy. Expanding into a multi-dimensional sci-fi and action adventure, the story balances magical world-hopping with grounded, existentialist themes like depression. Madeleine Martin leads the voice cast in a narrative that blends comedic absurdity with a mature, introspective edge.

What anchors the surreal journey is the dynamic between Fionna, her cat Cake, and Simon Petrikov, the former Ice King. As the trio leaps across alternate universes on a quest of self-discovery, the show folds in LGBT themes alongside a persistent threat. A shadowy, powerful antagonist intent on erasing them from existence stalks their every move, giving this colorful journey through the multiverse a sharp emotional baseline and real narrative tension.
