Overview
It follows 16-year-old Erik, who is used to violence both at home and in the schoolyard. After being expelled from his school in Stockholm due to his violent behavior, he is transferred to the boarding school Stjernsberg. It is his last chance to continue his education and break with his previous life, but at Stjernsberg, the violence is worse than at home. While there, he also engages in a forbidden love relationship with Marja, a member of the kitchen staff.
The 2023 drama Evil centers on the friction between a young man’s violent past and a new, rigid environment. At the boarding school Stjernsberg, the institutionalized cruelty Erik encounters proves more complex and entrenched than the aggression he faced at home. Gustaf Skarsgård appears in a production that examines whether a person can actually outrun their own instincts when surrounded by peers who replicate—or amplify—the behavior they are supposedly there to unlearn.
The series finds its tension in the disconnect between the pristine setting and the harsh hierarchies governing the daily lives of the students. By pairing a desperate search for redemption with a forbidden romance involving a member of the kitchen staff, the show shifts focus away from simple retribution.
