Series Brief

Overview

The series Gomorrah - The Origins explores Pietro Savastano's youth in the 1970s, in a Naples undergoing a transformation, poverty-stricken and plagued by cigarette smuggling. The story begins in 1977 with a very young Pietro, the son of no one, growing up as an adoptive brother in a family in the poorest part of Secondigliano. A street kid, he scrapes by as best he can, dreaming of a well-being that is still denied him. The story unfolds through Pietro's loss of innocence, along with his brothers and lifelong friends, their ambitions, and his first great love, which, like that of every teenager, will be wild and passionate. His encounter with Angelo, known as 'A Sirena,' the regent of Secondigliano, marks his entry into the world of crime. Through violence, alliances, and betrayals, Pietro discovers the price that life takes.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 86 /100

Critics have warmly received Gomorrah: The Origins, praising the prequel for successfully channeling the stylish aesthetic and atmosphere of 1970s Naples. Reviewers note that the show rewinds to the disco era with immense flair and high-energy drama, making it an easy recommendation for fans of the original flagship series.

While some critics pointed out that centering on younger protagonists gives the series a slightly lighter emotional heft compared to traditional adult mob sagas, major outlets agree that the show delivers wonderfully rich mob-drama set pieces and plenty of shocking narrative turns.

“Riotously chic, it makes fans of the original Gomorrah series an offer they cannot refuse by rewinding to the disco era”

“transports audiences to a gritty depiction of 1970s Naples in a show that will leave viewers stunned on multiple occasions.”

“it delivers familiar, wonderfully rich mob-drama set pieces”

“an atmospheric prequel to the cult mafia series”

Why fans love it

Gomorrah: The Origins moves the lens back to 1970s Naples, framing the organized crime landscape not through established power but through the eyes of a young, starving Pietro Savastano. Amidst the cigarette smuggling trade and the crushing poverty of Secondigliano, the series positions the rise of the Camorra as an inevitable consequence of survival. It trades the polished intrigue of the original series for the raw, unchecked desperation of a teenager scraping by on the streets.

The narrative arc centers on the shifting loyalties between Pietro, his adoptive family, and the influence of Angelo, known as A Sirena. Luca Lubrano provides a grounded entrance into this version of the city, one defined more by the loss of innocence than by the consolidation of wealth. By focusing on the emotional instability of youth alongside the brutality of the illicit economy, the show maps the precise moment a street kid begins to trade his empathy for status and survival.
