Overview
In the Wild West in the 1860s and 1870s, Sarah and John have founded New Babylon, a city of outcasts of all backgrounds. Haunted by the murder of his family eight years earlier, Django is still looking for his daughter, believing she may have survived the killing. When Django shockingly finds her in Babylon, about to marry John, Sarah - now a grown woman - wants Django to leave fearing he'll put Babylon in jeopardy. But Django, believing the city is in danger, is adamant that he will not lose his daughter twice.
What critics are saying
The 2023 reimagining of Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 spaghetti Western Django divided critics, leaning mostly toward a disappointing reception. While a few reviewers commended its ambitious scope and contemporary, female-focused psychological lens, the general consensus viewed the 10-part series as an underwhelming and slow-moving entry in the genre.
Negative reviews focused heavily on poor execution, sluggish pacing, and weak dialogue. Several critics described the narrative as meandering and over-complicated, arguing that it lacked the momentum needed to keep viewers invested between episodes. Complaints were also directed at wobbly character relationships, distracting accents, and an overall sense of mediocrity despite the strong premise.
Conversely, defenders of the show highlighted its cinematic presentation, steady pacing, and willingness to challenge standard Western conventions. Patient viewers and select outlets found merit in its focus on emotional spheres and utopian themes, though these strengths were generally overshadowed by the show's structural flaws.
“underwhelming and over-complicated”
“caught between good ideas and flawed execution”
“Django is a great series, carefully crafted and confident in its presentation”
“happy to be a mediocre Western, never delivering any particularly interesting dialogue”

The 2023 Western Django reimagines a frontier landscape built specifically for those rejected by mainstream society. By locating the action in New Babylon, a town created to shelter people of all backgrounds, the narrative prioritizes a fragile community over the typical lone-gunman tropes found in the genre. This setting acts as the central engine for the conflict, forcing characters to navigate the tension between their personal ghosts and the safety of their sanctuary.
Matthias Schoenaerts anchors the series as a man driven by the singular obsession of reclaiming his past. His performance resists the stoic silence often associated with Western protagonists, instead leaning into the vulnerability of a father desperate to reconcile with a daughter who no longer welcomes him. This friction between an outsider trying to protect his kin and a community fighting to maintain its autonomy shifts the focus from simple survival to the complexity of shared history. Ultimately, the show examines whether a city founded on the principle of inclusion can withstand the arrival of someone whose presence brings old tragedy back into the light.
