Overview

When Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life, he discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 75 /100

Moon Knight was generally well-received by critics, who welcomed its stylistic departure from the typical Marvel Cinematic Universe formula. Commentators frequently highlighted its stand-alone nature, noting the refreshing absence of heavy MCU continuity and guest appearances. Oscar Isaac received widespread acclaim for his dedicated, multifaceted performance, balancing witty charm, action, and the psychological instability of his split identities.

Reviewers also praised the miniseries for its globe-trotting pulp adventure tone, creative use of Egyptian mythology, and earnest attempt to tackle dissociative identity disorder and mental health themes. However, reception was not uniformly glowing. Some critics felt the narrative suffered from pacing issues, resembling a feature film stretched across six episodes, while more critical voices dismissed it as an uneven miss for the franchise.

“Moon Knight brings a pulpy, globe-trotting spirit to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

“Marvel’s Moon Knight may be the first real miss of the Disney+ MCU television era.”

“well-received for its excellent acting, dynamic action and its thoughtful representation of both mental health and Egyptian culture”

Why fans love it

This 2022 miniseries takes superhero storytelling into psychological mystery territory. Oscar Isaac leads the narrative as Steven Grant, a mild-mannered London gift-shop worker plagued by blackouts and memories of a life he never lived. Instead of a standard hero setup, the story centers on Steven discovering he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a physical frame with a ruthless mercenary named Marc Spector. Balancing these multiple identities gives the narrative a compassionate yet chaotic edge.

The plot expands into action and adventure as powerful Egyptian gods pull Steven and Marc into a deadly mystery. Bringing Egyptian mythology into modern England, the series mixes sci-fi and fantasy with grounded internal conflict. Fans respond to the constant tension between Steven's quiet nature and Marc's violent world, alongside an amused tone that keeps the surreal god-level battles anchored to a deeply human struggle.
