Royal Pains
"Some doctors still make house calls"
Overview
A young E.R. doctor who, after being wrongly blamed for a patient's death, moves to the Hamptons and becomes the reluctant "doctor for hire" to the rich and famous. When the attractive administrator of the local hospital asks him to treat the town's less fortunate, he finds himself walking the line between doing well for himself and doing good for others.
Royal Pains sits at the intersection of medical drama and a classic fish-out-of-water comedy. The premise trades high-stress emergency rooms for the manicured lawns of the Hamptons, creating a distinct tension between the protagonist’s high-stakes professional ethics and the whimsical, often trivial emergencies of the local elite. It is an exploration of the moral compromise that occurs when skilled labor meets extreme wealth.
Mark Feuerstein anchors a series that leans heavily into this geographical clash. The narrative avoids becoming a pure procedural by focusing on the friction between serving the ultra-wealthy for personal gain and maintaining a conscience through volunteer work at the local hospital. It presents a version of New York where the distance between the two worlds is measured in social standing rather than miles, forcing characters to constantly negotiate their status versus their sense of duty.
