Overview
Damages is an American legal thriller television series created by the writing and production trio of Daniel Zelman and brothers Glenn and Todd A. Kessler. The plot revolves around the brilliant, ruthless lawyer Patty Hewes and her protégée, recent law school graduate Ellen Parsons. Each season features a major case that Hewes and her firm take on, while also examining a chapter of the complicated relationship between Ellen and Patty. The first two seasons center around the law firm Hewes & Associates. Later seasons center more on Patty and Ellen's relationship as Ellen begins to distance herself from Hewes & Associates and begins an independent career.
Damages operates on the tension between a mentor and her protégé. Glenn Close portrays a lawyer defined by a ruthless professional instinct that leaves little room for standard morality. The series structures its legal investigations as psychological chess matches, emphasizing the deliberate manipulation inherent in high-stakes litigation.
Rather than focusing on the mechanics of a single trial, the narrative maps the evolving power dynamic between two women. The shift from a rigid law firm hierarchy to an independent career path forces a complex examination of how personal alliances fracture under pressure. Each season anchors a mystery to this core conflict, maintaining a cold, calculated tone that distinguishes it from common procedural crime dramas.
