Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 68 /100

The adaptation of C.J. Sansom's Tudor murder mystery series received generally positive to mixed reviews from critics. Many praised the show for its engaging historical backdrop, drawing favorable comparisons to medieval sleuth stories such as Cadfael and The Name of the Rose. Reviewers highlighted the sharp plot execution, political intrigue, and its contemporary feel, alongside positive notes on its thoughtful portrayal of a protagonist living with a disability in Tudor England.

Performances were a major selling point, particularly the dynamic between lead actor Arthur Hughes and co-star Anthony Boyle. Boyle's portrayal of Jack Barak was frequently singled out as a highlight, with critics enjoying the central duo's evolution from mutual mistrust to a working partnership.

However, the series was not without its detractors. Some critics felt the show underdelivered on world-building, character depth, and pacing, labeling it a frantic missed opportunity. Other negative reviews criticized the production as a tediously anachronistic drama that felt more like an amateurish medieval reconstruction than a grounded historical thriller.

Why fans love it

The 2024 mystery drama Shardlake grounds its period setting in the grim realities of 1536 England. Rather than favoring polished courtly intrigue, the series focuses on the muddy, isolated atmosphere of a remote monastery. This environment forces a shift in scale where every interaction is colored by the shifting religious and political tides of the time.

Arthur Hughes leads a cast that navigates a bleak narrative built on secrecy and institutional rot. The show relies on the methodical pace of a traditional whodunit, pulling the viewer into an investigation where evidence is scarce and local suspicion runs high. By keeping the stakes tied to the personal survival of its lead, the series maintains a tense, claustrophobic grip throughout its adaptation of the source material.
