The Ipcress File

The 2022 television adaptation of The Ipcress File received a largely receptive yet mixed response from critics. Reviewers generally admired its slick retro aesthetic, Cold War atmosphere, and the decision to modernize the story by giving expanded agency to its female characters. For many, it served as a stylish, enjoyable homage to classic espionage entertainment.

Reactions to the casting were more divided. While supporting turns—most notably Tom Hollander's—drew praise, opinions varied on Joe Cole stepping into the shoes of Harry Palmer. Some critics found his understated, witty turn compelling in its own right, while others felt the performance lacked the charisma necessary to escape the looming shadow of Michael Caine's iconic film portrayal.

The show's primary shortcomings were attributed to its pacing and storytelling. Multiple reviewers cited a lack of urgency and a convoluted narrative that required significant effort to follow across six episodes, leaving some critics feeling the throwback thriller was more tedious than truly gripping.
