Series Brief

Overview

The Sons of Anarchy (SOA) are an outlaw motorcycle club with many charters in the United States and overseas. The show focused on the original and founding charter, Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original, often referred to by the acronym SAMCRO, Sam Crow, or simply Redwood Charter. The charter operates both legal and illegal businesses in the small town of Charming, California. They combine gun-running and a garage, and involvement in porn film industry. Clay, the charter president, likes it old school and violent; while Jax, his stepson and the club's VP, has thoughts about changing the way things are done. Their conflict has effects on both the club and their personal relationship, especially when Jax goes on a personal quest to cleanse the SAMCRO name and image.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 78 /100

Sons of Anarchy is widely remembered as a cultural phenomenon that defined the prestige television era of the late 2000s. Critics frequently praised the series for its moral ambiguity, comparing it favorably to gritty crime dramas like The Shield and The Sopranos. The show earned acclaim for its stellar cast, slick writing, and its ability to blend high-stakes drama with rebellious, adrenaline-fueled action.

While the series remains a favorite for its complex, gritty storytelling, critical reception is not without nuance. Some reviewers initially questioned the show's "hard" persona, wondering if its posturing was merely overcompensation. Others note that while the show is undeniably captivating, its heavy reliance on graphic violence and intense themes limits its appeal and keeps it firmly outside the realm of family-friendly entertainment. Revisit reviews remain largely positive, suggesting that the series largely holds up as an engaging, albeit bloody, ride.

“An electric series with an intriguing premise, stellar cast, and slick writing bursting at the seams with chills, thrills, and plenty of kills.”

“This is a show where the good guys are bad, and the bad guys are just worst.”

“Loud, bloody, rebellious and often unexpectedly moving.”

“Captivating and violent, with an engaging plot and complex characters.”

Where to Watch

Why fans love it

The storytelling in Sons of Anarchy centers on the internal friction within an outlaw motorcycle club operating out of Charming, California. The narrative tension derives from a generational divide between the club president and his vice president, Jax, played by Charlie Hunnam. Their clashing philosophies regarding how to conduct business turn a volatile criminal enterprise into a battlefield of differing ideologies.

Rather than focusing solely on external threats, the series examines how a legacy of violence impacts a close-knit group connected by both blood and brotherhood. The plot turns on the attempt to transition from a violent, old school structure toward a different future. This push for redirection creates a constant power struggle that permeates the atmosphere of the Redwood Original charter, turning typical organized crime dynamics into a focused study of shifting loyalties and family legacy.
