Stick
"Take a big swing."
Overview
Pryce Cahill was headed for golf greatness when an on-course meltdown derailed his career. Now struggling to stay afloat, he goes all in to mentor Santi—a teenage phenom with immense potential—and maybe save himself.
What critics are saying
Stick has received generally warm, albeit qualified, reviews from critics who welcome it as a breezy and accessible sports dramedy. The overwhelming consensus credits Owen Wilson's easygoing charm and charismatic lead performance for elevating the material, keeping the narrative afloat with warmth, humor, and an appealing redemption arc.
Several outlets drew clear comparisons to other feel-good Apple TV+ offerings such as Ted Lasso, noting that the series leans heavily into comfort-watch territory. Applauded for its digestible runtime, focused plotting, and uplifting focus on second chances and mentorship, it delivers reliable entertainment for viewers seeking gentle emotional beats.
Conversely, more critical assessments point out that the show often relies too heavily on sports-comedy clichés and predictable shortcuts. Detractors noted that its overwhelming niceness and saccharine tone tend to gloss over deeper emotional trauma and narrative conflicts, leading to an experience that feels comforting yet familiar and occasionally shallow.
“This solid comedy-drama features the ever-watchable Hollywood star as a washed-up pro given a shot at redemption when he mentors a teen prodigy.”
“it polishes it to a nice shine with heart, humor, and some surprisingly touching moments about second chances”
“takes too many shortcuts while speeding through a 10-episode first season that plays out exactly as you expect”
“The Owen Wilson golf comedy is feel-good TV built on a feel-bad foundation.”

The friction between a fallen professional and a reckless teenager provides Stick with its primary engine. Golf serves as the backdrop, but the actual stakes reside in the cramped living quarters of a motorhome crossing the country. The show treats the sport as a backdrop for the grind of the road, balancing the technical precision of the game with the chaotic realities of a cross-country tour.
Owen Wilson inhabits the role of an athlete reckoning with past failures while navigating the unpredictable temperament of his young charge. Rather than a conventional sports triumphant march, the series focuses on the grit required to move past a public decline. It finds humor in the mismatch between a weary mentor and an uncouth prodigy, kept in motion by the quiet desperation of life on the amateur circuit.
