Overview

Weighed down by memories she can't shake, high schooler Koyuki Hikawa keeps everyone at arm's length — until three schoolmates draw her out of her shell.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 74 /100

The Ramparts of Ice has received a generally warm reception for its thoughtful portrayal of adolescent vulnerability and friendship. Critics appreciate its focus on emotional growth, noting that the coming-of-age teen drama effectively explores themes of opening up and navigating social connections in high school.

Reviews also highlight the characterization of protagonist Koyuki Hikawa, observing that quiet comedic beats and vulnerable moments keep her from reading merely as an aloof archetype. While reviewers note shifts in pacing and story structure from the original manga—as well as a quieter, less vibrant style compared to other works from the same creators—the narrative direction remains focused and grounded.

“Feelings matter in anime romantic drama about opening up.”

“Her seeking refuge in the teachers’ lounge gives her greater depth, a silly little gag that allows her to be more than the self-serious Ice Queen the student body sees her as.”
