Series Brief

Overview

100 years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 85 /100

Attack on Titan is widely regarded as a landmark series in modern anime, celebrated for its complex storytelling, high-stakes thrills, and a genre-defying blend of horror, fantasy, and action. Critics frequently praise the show as an engaging, fast-paced experience that balances intense emotional stakes with deep mysteries that unfold across its narrative. Many outlets highlight its reputation as an undisputed masterpiece that captivated audiences from its 2013 debut.

However, the series is also notable for its extreme, unflinching approach to violence. Reviewers caution that its reliance on graphic gore—featuring dismemberment and brutal deaths—may be off-putting to some viewers. While most acknowledge the show's artistic success, some critics note that it is not perfect and emphasize that its intense focus on shock value and disturbing imagery is a defining, if polarizing, characteristic of the viewing experience.

“Attack On Titan is finally over, and the ending cements it as one of the greatest anime series ever made. Offering something for almost every type of anime fan, Attack On Titan is an undisputed masterpiece.”

“It's thrilling, exciting entertainment fast and angsty enough for teens but meaty enough for older anime fans, too.”

“If blood or severed limbs—animated or no—make you queasy, then you’ll definitely want to avoid Attack on Titan.”

“This great combination of thriller/horror, mystery, fantasy and drama is the one that gives 'Attack on Titan' its rather rich context.”

Why fans love it

Attack on Titan operates on a grim scale that sets it apart from standard military fiction. Yuki Kaji anchors a narrative that focuses less on heroic triumph and more on the suffocating weight of inherited trauma. The series maintains a persistent sense of foreboding, treating the survival of humanity as a fragile and often fleeting reality. When the walls fall, the story shifts from a simple struggle against man-eating monsters into a complex reflection on the cycle of war and the heavy cost of retaliation.

The show balances fast-paced action sequences with quiet, tragic moments that emphasize the toll taken on the individual characters. It avoids traditional moral clarity in favor of a darker path where family history and duty collide. By grounding its fantasy elements in professional military structure, the series forces viewers to confront the brutal math of sacrifice. It remains a stark exploration of how far a civilization will go to protect itself when the line between victim and predator begins to blur.
