Series Brief

Overview

What would the world be like if 80 percent of the population manifested extraordinary superpowers called “Quirks” at age four? Heroes and villains would be battling it out everywhere! Becoming a hero would mean learning to use your power, but where would you go to study? U.A. High's Hero Program of course! But what would you do if you were one of the 20 percent who were born Quirkless? Middle school student Izuku Midoriya wants to be a hero more than anything, but he hasn't got an ounce of power in him. With no chance of ever getting into the prestigious U.A. Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 88 /100

My Hero Academia has been widely praised by critics as one of the standout action anime series of recent years. Reviewers frequently highlight its well-developed cast of characters, inspiring themes, and creative, fast-paced combat sequences. The series is lauded for balancing high-stakes hero drama with complex life lessons, making it an engaging watch for fans of the superhero genre.

While the series maintains a strong overall reception, some critiques have pointed toward uneven pacing in certain seasons, particularly during the later arcs. However, the consistent quality of the animation and the emotional depth of the storytelling ensure that the show remains a highly regarded staple of modern anime.

“This powered-up school drama is full of inspiring role models and surprisingly complex life lessons.”

“My Hero Academia season 1 is a great start to what I believe is one of the better action anime I've seen in a long a time.”

“The story and characters are well-developed, and it is a nicely paced series.”

“MHA shines a spotlight on Endeavor in a smart and surprisingly thoughtful episode.”

Why fans love it

My Hero Academia adapts the tropes of traditional shounen storytelling into a grounded exploration of institutionalized heroism. By setting the majority of the action within the walls of a specialized academy, the series balances high-stakes tournament arcs with the awkward reality of daily school life. The narrative distinguishes itself by treating superpower manifestation as a standardized, regulated career path rather than a mystical burden.

The friction between characters often transcends typical rivalry, digging into the psychological baggage of legacies and the resentment of an abusive father. Daiki Yamashita anchors the series through the protagonist’s evolving approach to his abilities, shifting the focus from innate talent to the messy work of refining control under pressure. It provides a methodical look at what happens when the next generation of protectors is forced to professionalize before they have fully navigated their own adolescence.
