Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 72 /100

Critical reception for Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition is generally positive, with reviewers regarding it as a respectable modern entry point to the story arc. Writers frequently praise the updated visual polish and overall presentation, noting that it stands as an impressive and accessible way for audiences to experience the iconic saga in animated form.

However, praise is somewhat tempered by comparisons to the manga and the 1997 anime adaptation. Critics and viewers point out that the quick pacing skips over subtle character interactions and key narrative details. Additionally, because the release re-cuts the movie trilogy into episodic television form, some reviewers highlight awkward editing choices and extended battle sequences as noticeable drawbacks.

“an excellent adaptation of the original manga arc and looks pretty solid for the current anime age”

“This is most people's best shot to see the Golden Age arc of Berserk in animated form, and it's certainly not a bad way to go about it”

“When it comes to taking a film or OVA and re-cutting it as a TV show, hardly has it been done with quality. If you’ve seen the original, the bad editing is very obvious.”

Why fans love it

This 2022 anime series leans heavily into dark fantasy, horror, and supernatural intrigue. Originating as a movie adaptation of the manga, the story balances brutal gore with a nuanced exploration of dynamic comradeship. At its core, the narrative hinges on the complicated bond formed between mercenary leader Griffith and lone swordsman Guts, who is forced into service after losing a duel.

As the Band of the Hawk evolves from a mercenary group into a full army, the narrative shifts seamlessly from battlefield action to heavy emotional stakes. Viewers drawn to seinen drama appreciate how the show grounds its bloody clashes in a growing uncertainty about a life dictated by violence, even as a dreadful fate looms ahead. Voice work from Hiroaki Iwanaga helps anchor a gritty, tragic story that pulls no punches.
