Series Brief

Overview

Sick, twisted, politically incorrect and Freakin' Sweet animated series featuring the adventures of the dysfunctional Griffin family. Bumbling Peter and long-suffering Lois have three kids. Stewie (a brilliant but sadistic baby bent on killing his mother and taking over the world), Meg (the oldest, and is the most unpopular girl in town) and Chris (the middle kid, he's not very bright but has a passion for movies). The final member of the family is Brian - a talking dog and much more than a pet, he keeps Stewie in check whilst sipping Martinis and sorting through his own life issues.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 68 /100

Critical response to Family Guy highlights a divide between praise for its outrageous comedy and criticism of its derivative nature. Some reviewers embrace Seth MacFarlane's animated creation as one of the funniest adult cartoons on television, celebrating its quirky character dynamics and constant pop-culture cross-references to literature, musicals, and classic TV shows.

While critics note that there is nothing particularly standout about the show's animation style, MacFarlane's voice work as Peter, Stewie, and Brian receives significant praise. On the other hand, skeptics view the humor as inconsistent, describing the series as a frantic farce that can come across as tiresome, sophomoric, or mean-spirited.

“one of the funniest and most entertaining adult cartoons”

“Although there is nothing particularly memorable about the animation, the selection of voices is praiseworthy. MacFarlane is amazing as Peter, baby Stewie, Brian the Dog”

“Family Guy aims to be outrageous, but the frantic farce veers to the tiresome and mean-spirited.”

“very funny; the quirky scenarios and characters can induce giggles or even guffaws in grown-ups”

Why fans love it

Family Guy has remained a staple of adult animation since its 1999 premiere by pushing the boundaries of social satire. The series focuses on the daily life of the Griffin family in Rhode Island, blending absurd plotlines with a sharp, cynical take on middle-class existence in New England. It frequently employs parody to mock cultural tropes, maintaining a chaotic energy that sets it apart from traditional sitcoms.

The dynamic between the characters provides the show with its consistent edge. Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the ensemble bring life to archetypes like the inept father and the intellectually superior child. The humor relies on unpredictable, politically incorrect scenarios that often veer into the surreal. By balancing domestic dysfunction with bizarre, high-stakes antics from the youngest member of the household, the show stays grounded in its own irreverent world.
