Overview
Friday night. 7pm. Film Club Week 198. Evie hasn't left the house in six months after a 'wobble', and Film Club is her escape. A weekly chance to create a world of wonder, deck the garage out in whatever the movie calls for and spend a few uninterrupted hours with Noa - her best friend and one of the few mates who still shows up. But tonight, things are different. Noa's got big news. A dream job is taking him across the other side of the country, which means that all of this is ending.
What critics are saying
Critics largely embraced Film Club, celebrating the six-part romantic comedy co-created by Aimee Lou Wood and Ralph Davis. Reviewers praised its sweet, nerdy charm and intelligent writing, highlighting how effectively it explores unspoken romantic feelings, friendship, and comforting cultural touchstones. Lead actors Aimee Lou Wood and Nabhaan Rizwan received widespread acclaim for their endearing dynamic and on-screen chemistry.
Many outlets characterized the series as a cozy, heartwarming watch capable of lifting viewers' spirits despite addressing heavier themes of mental health and isolation. Critics commended the show's quirky, well-observed sensibility, noting that it manages to remain grounded and charming thanks to a deep bench of colorful supporting characters.
While reception was overwhelmingly positive, a few reviewers offered mild critiques. Some noted that the series occasionally gets untangled in its various subplots or leans into sentimentality rather than fully digging into the protagonist's underlying distress. Nevertheless, consensus remains that it is a delightfully warm and thoughtful comedy well worth watching.
“Cute and deeply intelligent comedy about two film buff friends with unspoken feelings.”
“Heartwarmingly relatable and funny”
“A cosy, easy watch, but it could be more if it leaned more into the comedy and got untangled from its many subplots.”
“Quirky without being insufferable, helped by a deep bench of enjoyably colourful supporting players.”

Film Club finds its rhythm in the friction between a carefully constructed weekly tradition and the messy reality of growing up. Evie uses a converted garage to anchor her life in comfort and cinematic escapism, relying on a ritual that has kept her housebound anxieties at bay for nearly two hundred sessions. The series focuses on the sharp turning point when this predictable shelter faces an inevitable deadline, forcing a confrontation with the outside world.
The dynamic between leads like Aimee Lou Wood grounds the show in a balance of lightness and genuine stakes. It avoids grand melodrama in favor of examining the quiet, specific grief that comes with a best friend moving away. The result is a series about the ways people curate their personal worlds to feel safe and the sudden, awkward bravery required to step out of them.
