Overview

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is an American late-night talk show, created and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and broadcast on ABC.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 72 /100

Jimmy Kimmel Live! had a rocky beginning when it debuted on ABC in 2003. Retrospective accounts note that the program was initially slow to gain momentum, wrestling with low viewership and early difficulties booking high-profile guests in its late-night time slot. Archival critical reviews for its earliest run remain virtually nonexistent on major review aggregators.

Over the course of its run, the series found its footing as an unconventional alternative to traditional late-night staples. It carved out a distinct identity through recurring bits, comedic pranks, and ongoing gags, such as Kimmel's mock feud with Matt Damon and segments like Unnecessary Censorship.

Commentators also credit the show with pioneering aspects of modern late-night television, particularly in harnessing viral internet comedy. Segments like Mean Tweets and audience video challenges helped cement its lasting cultural footprint.

“The show was slow to take off, initially suffering from low ratings and difficulty attracting guests”

“Starting out as a quirky alternative to the old guard, it was able to hold its own, and received viral attention for some of its sketches and recurring segments”

“bleep and blur things whether they need it or not”

Why fans love it

Since its debut in 2003, this late-night talk show has built its identity on a mix of irreverent comedy and celebrity interaction. The program balances the traditional talk show format with a specific brand of humor that often leans into absurdity and unconventional segments. Jimmy Kimmel anchors the production, managing a rotation of guests that ranges from industry icons to musicians like Huey Lewis.

The show maintains a consistent presence as a source of both informative interviews and planned comedy sketches. It treats the late-night slot as a space to test ideas that prioritize reactions over polished presentation. By oscillating between factual segments and humorous interactions with recurring figures like Guillermo Rodriguez, the series sustains an energy that feels improvised even during its most structured moments.
