Overview

After Jay Leno's second retirement from the program, Jimmy Fallon stepped in as his permanent replacement. After 42 years in Los Angeles the program was brought back to New York.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 67 /100

Jimmy Fallon's transition to The Tonight Show was met with a mixture of enthusiasm for his infectious energy and reservations regarding the traditional late-night format. Reviewers noted his approachable, enthusiastic presence, praising his charm and celebratory launch as a successful shift into a fresh era for the long-running franchise.

However, critical response frequently contrasted Fallon's talent for participatory entertainment with the rigid demands of the opening monologue. Several reviewers pointed out that conventional joke-delivery exposed weaknesses in his material, arguing that his greatest assets remain celebrity interplay, musical parodies, and viral-ready physical bits rather than traditional stand-up comedy.

“an adorable nervousness and a sense of easy humor that was more than a “wow” – it was an undeniable start to a new era”

“His strengths lie elsewhere, as in a hip-hop dancing bit he did with Will Smith that highlighted his good-sport ability”

“a couple of bits with serious second-day-viewing potential”

Why fans love it

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon prioritizes playfulness over traditional interview structures. The program leans heavily into comedy games that involve high-profile guests, shifting the focus from scripted anecdotes to spontaneous interaction. This approach centers the experience on the energy between the host and his participants rather than formal conversation.

Returning the production to New York City changed the atmosphere of the long-running franchise. By integrating a live audience directly into the nightly segments, the show maintains a collegiate, interactive pace. Performers like Kelly Clarkson often participate in these creative experiments, contributing to a tone that feels closer to a variety hour than a standard late-night talk show.
