Overview

When a 34-year-old underachiever gets run over by a truck, his story doesn't end there. Reincarnated in a new world as an infant, Rudy will seize every opportunity to live the life he's always wanted. Armed with new friends, some freshly acquired magical abilities, and the courage to do the things he's always dreamed of, he's embarking on an epic adventure—with all of his past experience intact!

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 70 /100

Critical reception for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is sharply divided between high praise for its technical execution and strong discomfort with its protagonist. Commentators frequently commend the series' gorgeous artwork, high-quality animation, and detailed world-building, noting that its production values elevate it above standard isekai fantasy fare.

However, the show garners significant backlash for the behavior of its central character, Rudeus, an agoraphobic former shut-in who retains his perverted nature and questionable morals in his new life. While some observers argue that his traumatic past and flaws make his personal growth more meaningful, others criticize the story for sending mixed messages and seemingly rewarding distasteful conduct.

Ultimately, while some critics and viewers hail it as one of the standout fantasy releases of its year, others remain reluctant to recommend it broadly, citing the protagonist's off-putting tendencies.

“This fantasy isekai anime sends mixed messages and seems to reward bad behavior.”

“Mushoku Tensei is not going to be one that I highly recommend to people. There are better anime out there to watch.”

“gorgeous artwork, high-quality animation, and great soundtrack”

Why fans love it

A 34-year-old otaku underachiever gets hit by a truck and displaced into a high fantasy world, reincarnated as an infant named Rudy. What sets this 2021 animated series apart is how it handles the standard isekai setup. Rudy starts his new life with all his former adult memories intact, using that past experience to learn magical abilities, navigate sword and sorcery hazards, and build the life he missed out on the first time around.

The show blends action and adventure with ecchi humor and moments of sudden displacement, including plot turns driven by unexpected teleportation. Featuring voice work from Yumi Uchiyama, the series balances high fantasy tropes with a main character shaped by past failures. Fans connect with the contrast between rapid magical growth and the much slower, messier process of personal reform.
