Series Brief

Overview

In the year 2138, virtual reality gaming is booming. Yggdrasil, a popular online game is quietly shut down one day. However, one player named Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as "the most powerful wizard." The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) beginning to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 70 /100

Overlord is generally regarded as a compelling take on the isekai genre, distinguishing itself by centering on a protagonist who embraces a villainous role rather than a traditional hero. Critics praise the series for its strategic depth, strong world-building, and its ability to keep audiences engaged despite featuring an overpowered main character. Its unique perspective on gamesmanship is frequently cited as a major strength.

However, the show is not without its flaws. The production quality, specifically the use of CGI, received notable criticism for feeling outdated or poor. While the dark, violent nature of the story is balanced by effective, over-the-top humor, some reviewers suggest the series is an acquired taste that relies heavily on its premise to overcome its technical shortcomings.

“The narrative of 'Overlord' is enriched by its multiple perspectives and in-depth backstories.”

“The series is trying to do something different to the norm but is let down by some truly awful CGI.”

“It’s rare when a series can depict an OP protagonist without subverting the genre while keeping the viewers hooked.”

“This dark, bloody and gory series... there are sporadic moments of humor that very much acted as great respite.”

Why fans love it

When the virtual reality online game Yggdrasil shuts down in 2138, one player refuses to log out. Instead of disconnecting, the ordinary gamer finds himself trapped in the form of Momonga, an extraordinarily powerful skeleton wizard. The dynamic that sets the series apart is the world's sudden evolution: the game's non-player characters develop genuine emotions, shifting the story from a simple gaming simulation into a complex, living landscape.

Based on the light novel series, this 2015 anime captures viewers by leaning into a dark conqueror fantasy. Rather than searching for an escape, Momonga uses his unmatched magic to systematically take control of the supernatural realm. Anchored by voice talent including Satoshi Hino, the action-adventure series balances high-stakes magic battles with the ironic humor of a regular guy attempting to play the part of a supreme ruler.
