Overview

Passions run deep in a small Texas town, as three ranching dynasties fight for their land, their legacies and the people they love.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 48 /100

Netflix's Texas-set ranching drama Ransom Canyon has drawn mixed to negative reactions from television critics, with overall critical consensus leaning cool. Positioned as an answer to popular small-town sagas like Yellowstone and Virgin River, reviewers generally found the show predictable and formulaic, noting a lack of fresh ideas and low overall review scores.

Negative reviews characterize the series as a clunky, derivative soap opera. Outlets such as USA Today and The Hollywood Reporter described it as lightweight background noise hampered by generic tropes and uninspired performances. Critics reviewing the show's second season similarly noted a decline in momentum and watered-down drama.

Conversely, lighter entertainment outlets embraced the series as a fun guilty pleasure. Outlets like Variety, TheWrap, and PureWow highlighted the show's attractive cast, scenic vistas, and high-drama plotlines, considering it an entertaining option for viewers seeking easy-to-digest melodrama.

“It is featureless and formulaic, happy to borrow just a fraction of your attention while you mostly focus on other things.”

“paints a pretty Western landscape on a clunky family soap opera with no compelling actors”

“Netflix’s ‘Ransom Canyon’ Is Horny, Absurd and Ridiculously Entertaining”
