Overview
With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence.

What critics are saying
Marshals expands Taylor Sheridan's popular Yellowstone universe into a network broadcast law enforcement procedural on CBS, centering on Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton. Critics note that while the series attempts to give the character a fresh start away from the heavy shadow of his family legacy, the shift in format transforms the franchise's trademark prestige drama into a far more standard, workmanlike case-of-the-week show.
Overall critical reception has been lukewarm to negative. Reviewers largely feel the series suffers from being watered down for network television, lacking the grit, depth, and narrative momentum of the original flagship series. Some critics dismissed the show as formulaic action monotony that adds very little to the broader franchise lore, while others deemed it a capable but distinctly tempered extension that isn't nearly as compelling as other Sheridan spin-offs.
Despite the uninspired critical consensus, the series managed to attract massive ratings for its premiere. Family and content guides highlight that while the show still features frequent gunfights, brawls, and law enforcement violence, its overall execution is far more subdued compared to the mature content standards of previous Yellowstone installments.
“a capable and thoughtfully mounted continuation, yet one that occasionally feels as though something vital has been tempered”
“bland action monotony”
“Marshals frames itself as a new beginning for the character, a chance for him to finally come out from underneath the long shadow of his famous last name.”
“a network law enforcement procedural that bears only a passing family resemblance”

The transition from ranch life to federal law enforcement gives Marshals a unique tonal shift. By anchoring the series in the rugged landscape of Montana, the show frames the work of a U.S. Marshal through the lens of a traditional western. It swaps the internal politics of the Dutton family for a procedural structure where the primary challenge is surviving the vast, isolated terrain while managing the high psychological toll of the job.
Much of this friction rests on Luke Grimes, whose character pivots from cowboy to elite state agent. The show sidesteps typical city-based police tropes to focus on the raw, open-ended nature of range justice. It explores how a former Navy SEAL applies military discipline to the unpredictable demands of tracking fugitives across the wilderness. The result is a grounded take on the procedural genre that feels more like a modern survival drama than a standard crime investigation.
