"The world does not belong to humans alone."
Overview
In this fantasy drama series, a lonely young woman finds her soul mate and discovers they are both part of an ancient legend.
What critics are saying
Critics generally received Shahmaran with positive curiosity, praising its rich blending of Turkish folklore, romance, and fantasy elements. Reviewers highlighted the show's unique atmospheric tone, noting that it successfully weaves mysticism, crime, and drama into a serious and unconventional love story.
While the series' ambitious genre-splicing and strong performances earned praise, several critics noted pacing issues. Some reviewers felt the eight-episode narrative felt drawn out and operated primarily as a prologue for a larger story, requiring viewers to have patience for its slow-burn development.
Despite the slower narrative speed, commentators recommended the show to fans of mythological and supernatural dramas, finding its dark setting and multi-genre approach compelling enough to keep audiences invested.
“the perfect mix of crime, thriller, mystery, romance, fantasy, and horror”
“outstanding plot and excellent cast”
“Shahmaran season one’s biggest fault is that it is far too long.”
“A true genre mix that suits the story very well”

Premiering in 2023, Shahmaran grounds supernatural folklore inside an intimate mystery. The drama follows an isolated woman confronting an estranged grandparent, only to find a soul mate tied to an ancient myth. Led on screen by Serenay Sarıkaya, the narrative quickly expands from personal drama into a tense mix of action, adventure, and sci-fi mystery, particularly once reptilian humanoids emerge to bridge myth and reality.
Viewers appreciate the series for its bold tempo and frantic edge. It refuses to sand down its stranger impulses, pairing emotional friction and family estrangement with an unapologetically mature presentation that features both male and female rear nudity. By treating creature lore and human connection with equal weight, the show builds a distinctive, offbeat rhythm that sets it apart from typical fantasy dramas.
