Overview

In the year 2024, the world has collapsed. Grotesque monsters lurk amongst the ruins of Japan, while remaining people scrape together what they can to survive. Kiruko, an odd-job girl in Nakano, accepts a mysterious woman's dying wish to take a boy named Maru to a place called Heaven. Why fans love it

Post-apocalyptic futures are familiar territory in anime, but this 2023 seinen adaptation stands out through its quiet mystery and stark focus on survival. Set in a collapsed Japan where grotesque monsters wander the ruins, the story balances gritty action with an eerie trek across a destroyed world. Rather than relying solely on monster fights, the series relies on the compelling dynamic between Kiruko and Maru as they honor a dying wish to find a place called Heaven.

The narrative holds interest by introducing strange, unsettling themes—including organ transplants and the cryptic premise of a boy who looks identical to Maru. Voice acting from Gen Sato helps ground the journey amid the apocalyptic landscape. Based on the comic, this animated sci-fi mystery blends intense action with a genuinely unpredictable adventure, proving that the search for answers can be just as dangerous as the creatures lurking in the ashes.
