Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 52 /100

Critical reception for The Shiunji Family Children is distinctly mixed, with reviewers divided over its controversial pseudo-incestuous romantic premise. Some critics found the central hook frustrating and uncomfortable, pointing to the taboo nature of the plot as a major hurdle to enjoying the series.

Conversely, viewers willing to look past the premise found a few redeeming qualities. Reviews noted that the show benefits from solid animation and appealing character designs, making it more digestible than other prominent modern harem comedies.

Ultimately, while few consider it a standout anime, some critics felt it managed to be reasonably watchable and less cringe-inducing than similar entries in the genre.

“This show left me with a certain type of anger.”

“It’s definitely not a great anime. But it looks good, has cute girls, and isn’t as trashy as Rent-a-Girlfriend.”

“...it only made me cringe slightly a few times, which is far better than I can say for Rent-a-Girlfriend...”

Why fans love it

The Shiunji Family Children plays a familiar romcom trope with a sudden, disruptive shift. Living in a Tokyo mansion, the main character Arata spends his days dealing with the specific headaches of having five sisters. When the biological connection between them is revealed as non-existent, the tension moves beyond typical sibling bickering. It forces a recalibration of established boundaries within a wealthy household.

The series finds its rhythm in the abrupt transition from expected family dynamics to something far more unpredictable. Hana Hishikawa and the rest of the cast portray characters who must reconcile their histories with their new social reality. By grounding the premise in the rigid environment of the Shiunji home, the show turns a sudden revelation into a test of how these seven people choose to act when their established roles unexpectedly vanish.
