Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 80 /100

Critics broadly praised The Helicopter Heist as a gripping, well-executed entry in the true-crime thriller landscape. Reviewers lauded the series for its intense atmosphere, tight pacing, and realistic grounding, noting that its basis in Sweden's famous true story adds a rich layer of intrigue. The show's subtle, character-driven narrative and slick heist execution received consistent acclaim across multiple outlets.

While some reviewers noted that the series relies on familiar genre tropes and occasionally wanders into distracting subplots, most agreed that the strong lead performances and polished production keep the narrative thoroughly entertaining. Fans of Nordic noir and psychological procedurals in particular were encouraged to give the series a watch.

“This is a series rippling with paranoia and fear; with forensic investigation and sleepless nights; with action and emotion.”

“a very well-oiled example of crowd-pleasing genre fare supplemented by intriguing real-life details and admirable performances.”

“It delivers a subtle, character-driven narrative that lingers long after the credits roll.”

“The series takes us on an intense ride that is emotional and gripping, but at times, it gets lost in the subplots.”

Why fans love it

The 2024 miniseries The Helicopter Heist grounds its action in a specific Swedish reality rather than typical genre artifice. By pulling from true events that unfolded during the 2000s, the drama avoids the stylized shortcuts common in similar crime stories. It tracks an attempt to breach a secure cash depot, treating the logistics of the plan as a primary source of tension.

Ardalan Esmaili anchors a cast that balances the high stakes of the operation with the personal history of two friends nearing the end of their criminal careers. The series succeeds by focusing on the precise mechanics required for such an ambitious theft. Instead of relying on spectacle, the story stays focused on the friction between these individuals and the law enforcement officers tracking them across Stockholm.
