Critics appreciated the visceral archival materials, noting that behind-the-scenes footage tracing planning meetings from nostalgic optimism to complete negligence made for especially compelling viewing. The raw portrayal of the festival's descent into flipped cars, fires, and trash offered an engrossing, albeit horrifying, look at the three-day collapse.

At the same time, multiple reviewers noted that the series arrived shortly after HBO's Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage and ended up rehashing much of the same ground.
