Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 60 /100

Critical reception for The Bombing of Pan Am 103 is mixed, with reviewers generally admiring the production's respectful approach to a horrific real-life tragedy while questioning its narrative execution. Critics commended the miniseries for its heartbreaking, sensitive tone and its methodical dedication to exploring the immense international investigation that followed the 1988 disaster over Lockerbie.

However, several prominent reviews argued that the show struggles to sustain dramatic tension across its episodes. Commentators pointed out that while the fact-heavy series is clearly well-intentioned and thorough, its sprawling narrative and slow pacing can leave it feeling ungainly, delivering a less memorable dramatic experience than the gravity of the historical event warrants.

“an emotionally moving and respectful look into the 1988 Lockerbie disaster and the massive global investigation that followed”

“delivers a less-than-memorable portrait of an indelible event”

“well meaning BBC drama has some startling and impressive moments, it mainly forgets to actually find any drama”

Why fans love it

True-crime dramatizations often struggle to balance the immense scale of a disaster with the precise grit of its aftermath. This 2025 miniseries tackles the 1988 tragedy over Lockerbie by focusing heavily on the historic murder investigation that followed the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103. By zeroing in on the relentless efforts of Scottish law enforcement during the deadliest act of terrorism on British soil, the drama grounds a massive tragedy in detailed procedural work.

A skilled cast that includes Eddie Marsan brings gravity to a story defined by grief and an overwhelming pursuit of justice. The miniseries format allows the narrative the space it needs to examine the record-breaking scope of the police response without rushing the real-world events. Viewers drawn to serious, fact-based crime stories appreciate how the show honors the history while delivering a tense, focused narrative.
