Series Brief

Overview

Set against the backdrop of the city of Amsterdam, Piet Van der Valk and his team investigate a series of high-profile cases immersed in the worlds of art, politics, addiction, mysticism and the fashion industry.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 45 /100

The reboot of Van der Valk met with a generally lukewarm to negative critical reception. Reviewers largely found the series derivative and sluggish, noting that it leans heavily into familiar police procedural clichés, from a brooding, maverick detective with a haunted past to contrived storylines and a persistently glum tone.

Despite widespread disappointment with the plotting and pacing, critics consistently highlighted the Amsterdam setting as the show's saving grace. The location filming earned praise as an attractive visual backdrop that effectively showcases both the famous canals and the city's lesser-known corners.

“Visually, Van Der Valk is a treat.”

Radio Times

“The Dutch capital is captured here in all its tawdry beauty, but plot contrivances and a distracting lead make this Seventies re-hash a hard sell”

The Independent

“I found its three feature-length episodes really hardgoing. Marc Warren plays Commisaris Piet Van der Valk, a Dutch detective... like so many TV cops before him.”

Why fans love it

Piet Van der Valk leads a dedicated team of police detectives through complex murder investigations across Amsterdam. Debuting in 2020, this crime drama grounds its narrative in the distinctive atmosphere of the Netherlands, combining the classic beats of a criminal investigation with a rich sense of place and solid colleague dynamics.

Marc Warren stars as the titular lead detective, steering his crew through a series of high-profile cases that cut across wildly different corners of Dutch society. Rather than sticking purely to routine street crime, the team tackles cases deeply tangled in the worlds of art, fashion, politics, mysticism, and addiction. Followers of police procedurals appreciate this blend of memorable European backdrops, varied criminal cases, and the sharp rapport among the central investigators.
