Overview

A coming-of-age story about an outsider who, against all odds and numerous challenges, fights for love and acceptance and for her place in the world. The series centers on a young orphaned girl in the late 1890s, who, after an abusive childhood spent in orphanages and the homes of strangers, is mistakenly sent to live with an elderly woman and her aging brother. Over time, 13-year-old Anne will transform their lives and eventually the small town in which they live with her unique spirit, fierce intellect and brilliant imagination.

Why fans love it

This period drama transforms the familiar 19th-century setting into a canvas for intense emotional stakes. Rather than leaning on the typical reserved temperament of the era, the series centers on an imaginative teenager whose abrasive honesty serves as a catalyst for change. By placing an outsider at the heart of a small, traditional community, the narrative examines how unconventional viewpoints reshape the social fabric of a rigid household.

Amybeth McNulty anchors the production with a performance that balances sharp intellect against a history of systemic neglect. The storytelling avoids the sentimental traps common in coming-of-age tales, choosing instead to focus on the grit required to build a found family. It is a portrait of resilience in an unforgiving world, defined by a cheerful insistence on belonging despite constant rejection.
