Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 85 /100

North of North earned widespread praise from critics who were won over by its warmth, sharp writing, and distinct setting in Canada's Arctic territory of Nunavut. Reviewers found the comedy charming and engaging, admiring its ability to weave lighthearted small-town romantic comedy elements with genuine depth and edge surrounding the central character's messy marital split.

Critics also celebrated the series' respectful, authentic portrayal of Inuk culture and community. Rather than treating its setting as an explanatory lesson, the show trusts viewers to immerse themselves in the rhythm and quirks of the community, earning favorable comparisons to other nuanced Indigenous-led series. Strong performances from an ensemble cast filled with fresh talent further cemented the show's reputation as a delightful and refreshing breakout comedy.

“The show’s abundant warmth and its tenderness for its characters suggest a slightly hokier, cornier show. But the edge and depth of 'North' do emerge over its eight episodes.”

“a charming small town comedy, with — as is so often the case in small town comedies — a generous portion of rom-com stirred in”

“Like 'Reservation Dogs,' 'North of North' doesn’t feel the need to explain everything. I am so grateful that contrary to the wave of literalism in film/TV, this series does not bother providing an Inuit Life 101 guide to its viewers”

“the series makes for an engaging show that highlights Inuk culture and community while still being approachable and understandable”
