Series Brief

Overview

Formerly filthy rich video store magnate Johnny Rose, his soap star wife Moira, and their two kids, über-hipster son David and socialite daughter Alexis, suddenly find themselves broke and forced to live in Schitt's Creek, a small depressing town they once bought as a joke.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 68 /100

Initial critical reception for Schitt's Creek leaned skeptical to mixed during its debut, with reviewers questioning the show's familiar riches-to-rags premise. Critics at major trades like Variety described the setup as tired and compared it unfavorably to past fish-out-of-water comedies, while The New York Times found the central logic strained beyond its opening capitalist-bashing setup.

However, other early appraisals and retrospective reviews note that the series quickly found its footing as the spoiled Rose family softened and evolved. Critics singled out the subtle character growth, nuanced ensemble performances, and Canadian charm that gradually transformed narcissistic caricatures into deeply caring, lovable figures over time.

“With over-the-top but remarkably nuanced characters, including Dan Levy's often prissy, sometimes mean, but ultimately open-hearted David, this 'rich city people go to the backwoods and learn lessons' series is delightful.”

“These moments signal the small town comedy just might have room to grow.”

“The most brilliant aspect of Schitt’s Creek was the writer’s ability to add texture and complexity to the characters subtly.”

“Seldom has a title been more descriptive than “Schitt’s Creek,” a tired reunion of SCTV’s Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara...”
