Overview

Army Wives is an American drama series that follows the lives of four army wives, one army husband, and their families.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 63 /100

Critical reaction to Army Wives was decidedly mixed at its launch, though it garnered a dedicated following over time. Several critics and viewers acknowledged the fertile premise of exploring domestic life on a military base, with some finding it to be a satisfying and engaging drama that eventually evolved into an enthralling series. Retrospective viewers and military-connected audiences often noted its emotional resonance and long-running appeal.

However, early reviews frequently criticized the show's melodramatic tendencies and dialogue, arguing that it struggled to break free from conventional soap opera tropes. Some professional critics felt it operated as a hollow dramatic device with clichéd writing, while reactions among real-life military communities were notably polarized—drawing both strong supporters and fierce detractors who felt the portrayal did a disservice to actual military spouses.

“too often feels like a hollow dramatic device — burdened with been-there, heard-that dialogue”

“There's absolutely nothing wrong with a good soap opera. It's just that Army Wives doesn't start out as a particularly good soap opera.”

“A satisfyingly meaty drama.”
