Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 62 /100

Critical reception for Crew Girl is decidedly mixed, characterizing the series as a conventional but easy-to-watch entry in the young-adult sports drama genre. Many reviewers found comfort in its familiar formula, noting that beneath its expected teen romance beats lies a charming underdog story bolstered by surprising sincerity.

Critics widely agreed that the series is at its strongest when focusing on the sport itself, praising the kinetic coxswain sequences, rowing choreography, and the dynamics of the team learning to pull together. However, several reviews took issue with the surrounding melodrama, arguing that predictable plotting, clichéd tropes, and formulaic school rivalries keep the narrative from achieving anything truly distinctive.

“worn-down tropes hinder “Crew Girl,” leaving its cast to sleepwalk through unrealistic, contrived plot points.”

“Where the show earns gold, however, is in its ability to bring these characters together as a team, even when they have personal drama to contend with.”

“As far as bingeable YA dramas go, Crew Girl is probably good enough.”
