Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 83 /100

My Happy Marriage has earned widespread appreciation from critics and viewers as a tender, poignant fantasy romance. Reviewers praise the anime for blending heavy themes of past trauma, abuse, and neglect with a deeply wholesome, comforting emotional journey. The deliberate, slow-burn pacing allows its central relationship to develop naturally, offering a refreshing alternative to standard high school romantic comedies.

Critics also point to the show's well-crafted leads and balance of tones as key strengths. While Miyo's deep-seated lack of confidence can present a slow emotional climb, her gradual path toward self-worth and courage is viewed as believable and earned. Supported by colorful secondary characters and an appealing mix of drama, light comedy, and kitsch, the series has established itself as an engaging and emotionally resonant watch.

“a tender romantic drama about a young woman finding happiness and love after a lifetime of abuse and neglect”

“it finds a happy tonal medium that cultivates a sense of drama while still giving space to comedy and the goofy kitsch of this romance”

“a great-looking, poignant series that’ll undoubtedly be a slow burn, but its grown-up themes of abuse and eventual redemption will make it an interesting watch”

“there is plenty of trial and tragedy in the real world already, making the romance in My Happy Marriage a breath of fresh air”

Why fans love it

Set against the aesthetic backdrop of the Meiji and Taisho periods, this anime blends historical atmosphere with subtle fantasy elements. The narrative focuses on the quiet transformation of its lead character under the influence of her new, powerful fiancé. By leaning into the romantic shoujo tradition, the show maintains a deliberate pace that emphasizes emotional growth over rapid action.

Reina Ueda voices the protagonist as she navigates the transition from a history of domestic cruelty to a partnership defined by mutual respect. The supernatural threads woven into the plot serve as a vehicle for uncovering the suppressed talents of a woman long viewed as an outcast by her own kin. It creates a grounded, character-driven experience within a stylized period setting.
