Overview

The Meiji Era was one of great renewal for Japan, where swords and killing were outlawed. However, many survivors from the time of Revolution still live, lurking in the shadows and waiting for a chance to use their killing blades again. Only Kenshin Himura, formerly one of the most brutal of killers, hopes to keep his swordsman's honor and still live in the new era.

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 75 /100

Critical reception for the 1996 Rurouni Kenshin anime acknowledges its status as an enduring classic of the samurai drama genre. Many viewers consider the series a formative and formidable entry in anime history that remains relevant long after its initial release.

Technical critiques are more mixed, particularly regarding the animation quality. While some of these shortcomings are attributed to the era of production, reviewers have pointed to inconsistent lighting, awkward facial expressions, and lackluster backgrounds as notable drawbacks of the visual presentation.

“Rurouni Kenshin, even years after it first released, holds up as a formidable samurai drama in anime format.”

“Like many Shounen, Rurouni Kenshin's animation has its moments, but for the most part is riddled with bad lighting and strange facial expressions.”

Why fans love it

Set during Japan's Meiji period, this 1996 anime series balances action, comedy, and romance against a backdrop of historic transition. The story follows Kenshin Himura, a former brutal assassin from the Bakumatsu revolution who attempts to navigate a new era where swords and killing are outlawed. Fans connect with his struggle to maintain honor while remnants of the revolution, including former Ishin Shishi and Shinsengumi figures, lurk in the shadows waiting to draw their blades again.

The series stands out for blending high-stakes shounen action with light comedy and romantic threads. Mayo Suzukaze leads the voice cast, capturing the contrast between a violent past and a self-imposed life of exile. It delivers a distinct samurai narrative that treats its historical setting with weight while keeping an animated, accessible energy.
