Overview

After he witnesses his father’s murder at the family dojo, Ryo Hazuki dedicates his life to finding the man responsible — a mission that takes him from the streets of Yokosuka, Japan to the sprawling metropolis of Hong Kong, and beyond. Soon he’ll learn that larger, mystical forces are at play as he trains to become the ultimate martial artist in his quest for revenge.

Why fans love it

The 2022 animation leans heavily into the precise aesthetic of 1980s Japan and Hong Kong. It translates the pacing and interactive focus of its source material—a video game series—into a linear narrative of grief and physical discipline. Rather than rushing through the action, the show lingers on the quiet, methodical training required for Ryo Hazuki to refine his skills as a martial artist.

Masaya Matsukaze voices an protagonist defined by a singular, cold objective. The story transforms a personal tragedy at a family dojo into a wider hunt for a murderer, eventually pulling in mystical elements that shift the gravity of the protagonist's quest. It functions as a moody exercise in vengeance that prioritizes the slow accumulation of combat experience over explosive, constant conflict.
