Brad Ingelsby's follow-up to Mare of Easttown shifts from a murder mystery to an intense cat-and-mouse cops-and-robbers thriller. Critics largely praise the ensemble cast, particularly leading turns from Mark Ruffalo and Tom Pelphrey, agreeing that strong acting and nuanced character beats elevate what could otherwise feel like a familiar crime procedural.

However, the drama's deliberate pacing divided reviewers. Several critics appreciated the patient buildup and emotional depth, but others noted that the series takes multiple episodes to hit its stride and risks testing viewers' patience with a slow start.

The show's grim tone also drew mixed reactions. While admirers found the dour, working-class Philadelphia atmosphere atmospheric and compelling, detractors argued that the production leans too heavily into bleak, overlong prestige tropes and self-seriousness.
