The Dawn of the Witch
Overview
Saybil can't remember his life before he joined the magic academy. He has the lowest grades, because his amnesia leaves him unmotivated. One day, the school headmaster, Albus, orders him to participate in a dangerous special training. "I want you to spread the use of magic in an area where they hold witch hunts." This story is a spin-off of 'Grimoire of Zero.'
The Dawn of the Witch balances the rigid structure of a magic academy with the high-stakes friction of a world hostile to sorcery. While the setting carries the expected tropes of fantasy anime, the story pivots on Saybil, a central figure defined by a lack of personal history rather than the typical ambitious heroism. This absence of memory creates a unique kind of lethargy that contrasts sharply with the frantic, life-threatening training imposed by Albus.
Shuichiro Umeda voices a protagonist whose struggle to find purpose in a classroom setting becomes a practical problem when he is sent into dangerous territory. By acting as a spin-off to Grimoire of Zero, the series expands its landscape to address the political tension of regions that enforce witch hunts. It frames magical ability not as a simple power fantasy, but as a precarious tool that the characters are tasked with selling to an audience that may not want it.
