Series Brief

Overview

Saybil can't remember his life before he joined the magic academy. He has the lowest grades, because his amnesia leaves him unmotivated. One day, the school headmaster, Albus, orders him to participate in a dangerous special training. "I want you to spread the use of magic in an area where they hold witch hunts." This story is a spin-off of 'Grimoire of Zero.'

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 52 /100

Critical reception for The Dawn of the Witch was noticeably divided, with reviewers offering mixed takes on its execution as a fantasy spin-off. Some critics appreciated its subversion of typical overpowered protagonist tropes, noting that the main character's immense magic is restricted rather than immediately exploited. Compliments were also paid to the narrative for keeping stakes grounded and avoiding cheap character power-ups or heavy plot armor.

Conversely, several critics found the lead character, Saybil, to be a major detriment to the show. Reviews frequently described him as a dull, robotic cipher whose lack of personality made it difficult to stay invested in the story. Additionally, fans and reviewers familiar with the parent series, Grimoire of Zero, expressed disappointment with how legacy characters were relegated to minor plot devices, leaving the series feeling like an unnecessary continuation for some.

“The narrative for Dawn of the Witch was more exciting, intriguing, and interesting, and overall written better”

“The Dawn of the Witch has surprisingly become one of my favorite anime this season”

“it's centered on, by far, its least engaging character”

“this is just a pointless and disappointing sequel to something I enjoyed, which makes me all the more annoyed by it”

Why fans love it

The Dawn of the Witch balances the rigid structure of a magic academy with the high-stakes friction of a world hostile to sorcery. While the setting carries the expected tropes of fantasy anime, the story pivots on Saybil, a central figure defined by a lack of personal history rather than the typical ambitious heroism. This absence of memory creates a unique kind of lethargy that contrasts sharply with the frantic, life-threatening training imposed by Albus.

Shuichiro Umeda voices a protagonist whose struggle to find purpose in a classroom setting becomes a practical problem when he is sent into dangerous territory. By acting as a spin-off to Grimoire of Zero, the series expands its landscape to address the political tension of regions that enforce witch hunts. It frames magical ability not as a simple power fantasy, but as a precarious tool that the characters are tasked with selling to an audience that may not want it.
