If Sal Singh isn't a murderer and the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from finding out the truth?

Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 68 /100

Critical reception for A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is generally positive, with many reviewers finding it to be an entertaining, fast-paced, and charming young-adult mystery. Publications like The Guardian, Common Sense Media, and The New Statesman commended the adaptation for balancing lighthearted adolescent tropes with darker thematic elements, offering a fun and engaging binge-watch that handles sensitive subjects with care.

Several critics praised the series' atmospheric tone, soundtrack, and lead performances, highlighting how the show effectively captures the suspense of a modern teen sleuth story. Reviews from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter noted that while the plot occasionally relies on coincidences and familiar genre mechanics, it still functions well as an accessible and lively thriller.

Conversely, some reviewers felt the series fell short of its potential. Critics from IndieWire, Screen Rant, and Ready Steady Cut criticized the show for stripping away the book's deeper character development, relying heavily on standard YA tropes, and failing to bring original flair to the detective genre.

“a fun, twisty tale of teens who find more than they bargained for in what appeared to be a cut-and-dried case”

“It manages to be a meditation on the trials and tribulations of growing up and on the manifestations of grief.”

“a delicious binge for anyone who loves a good murder mystery.”

“likely a more than sufficient diet-detective series, free of the dramatic weight of its more realistic counterparts and bereft of any true charm, excellence, or originality.”

Why fans love it

The 2024 drama series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder shifts the traditional amateur detective trope into a dark, intimate space. By centering the story on Pippa Fitz-Amobi, an inquisitive teen challenging a closed police case, the show favors low-stakes school settings against high-stakes criminal secrets. The suspense stems less from elaborate crime scenes and more from the tension of a small community where everyone has something to hide.

Emma Myers plays an investigator who is as dogged as she is vulnerable, moving through the mystery with a clear sense of purpose. Because the narrative is based on a young adult novel, the show maintains a focused, personal perspective on the lingering trauma of a murder in a quiet town. It functions as a tense thriller that asks whether one person can actually shake the truth loose from a town convinced it already knows the answer.
