Candy takes the familiar structure of a 1980s Texas period piece and pivots into a grueling examination of suburban containment. The miniseries avoids standard procedural tropes by centering the tension on the suffocating social expectations placed on women during that era. It transforms a notorious axe murder into a study of how fragile domestic stability can actually be.

Much of the series relies on Melanie Lynskey to ground the cold clinical facts of the crime in genuine human confusion. The courtroom drama sections provide a sharp contrast to the intimate, quiet scenes of the affair, eventually forcing the viewer to analyze the validity of self-defense claims against a backdrop of religious and social judgment.
