Critical Reception

What critics are saying

Score 60 /100

Critical reception for Fishbowl Wives is largely mixed, with reviewers describing the series as an aesthetically striking yet narratively uneven romantic drama. Critics highlighted the show's willingness to dive into somber, mature themes surrounding high-society expectations, domestic pressures, and infidelity, often framed through bold eroticism and high-production visuals.

Several reviewers praised the strong screen chemistry between the performers and appreciated the intimate storytelling across individual wives' story arcs. The show was commended in its early episodes for capturing nuanced, realistic dynamics where female protagonists feel forced to suppress their aspirations for their partners.

However, the series faced notable criticism for pacing flaws and narrative heavy-handedness. Multiple outlets noted that the show accelerates clumsily toward the end, relying on somewhat overt metaphor and moralizing overtones that undermine its initial subtlety and leave the drama feeling somewhat inconsistent.

“full of contradictions and inconsistencies, but there's some worthwhile drama at its core”

“erotic first, opening with a long sex scene before it cruises into a somber world of appearances”

“An enjoyable but flawed romantic drama”

“With a keen eye for details, this layered and meaningful show will keep you hooked from start to finish”

Why fans love it

Fishbowl Wives presents domestic entrapment through the lens of high-end luxury. The story centers on the stark contrast between public perception and private trauma. While characters reside in an enviable penthouse and maintain the appearance of a glamorous lifestyle, the narrative focuses on the emotional isolation and systemic abuse occurring behind closed doors. By utilizing the metaphor of a goldfish in a glass sphere, the show illustrates the paralysis of someone who feels unable to escape a controlled environment.

Ryoko Shinohara anchors this adaptation of the manga series, grounding the heightened circumstances in a performance defined by restraint. The drama moves beyond simple infidelity, instead examining the complicated motives that tether people to painful situations. It is a calculated study of love, agency, and the persistent desire for a life that exists outside of a confined space. By prioritizing the internal landscape of these women over standard melodrama, the series offers a somber look at the search for liberation.
