The Creep Tapes
"More creeps. More tapes."
Overview
A secluded serial killer lures videographers into his world with the promise of a paid job documenting his life. Unfortunately, as the tape rolls, the killer's questionable intentions surface with his increasingly odd behavior and the victims will learn they may have made a deadly mistake.
What critics are saying
The television adaptation of Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass's found-footage horror series received generally positive, though noticeably polarized, critical reactions. Enthusiasts applauded the anthology format as a natural and fitting expansion of the franchise's lore, appreciating how it leans into the tapes teased in the original films to deliver a signature blend of awkward comedy, escalating discomfort, and suspense.
Duplass received widespread praise for his versatile performance, with critics marveling at his ability to bring nuance, range, and distinct identities to each installment's iteration of the killer. Multiple reviewers noted that while the repetitive formula occasionally threatens to fatigue, the series remains inventive, serving as a thoroughly entertaining vehicle for fans eager to watch his predatory mind games unfold.
However, detractors felt the episodic structure worked against the material. Skeptical reviewers argued that the rapid pacing strips away the excruciating, slow-burn tension that made the original movies so unnerving, leading to disjointed segments that rely too heavily on Duplass's quirks rather than effective found-footage craft and genuine terror.
“If Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass’ Creep must be a franchise, then The Creep Tapes is the optimum playground for it.”
“While “The Creep Tapes” relies on the rawness of the found-footage technique, the rapidly-paced episodes lack the predatory undertone that makes the movies so unnerving.”
“It's just a very good excuse to return to a world audiences know and love.”
